Sacramento Update
Legislative session ended September 13 (yes, there was Saturday session!). Now we are in the 30 day window for the Governor to sign legislation – anything not signed or vetoed within 30 days automatically becomes law (a sort of “pocket signature”).
Send in a letter of support for any legislation you want to encourage him to sign: leg.unit@gov.ca.gov!
Policy Discussion: Equal Housing Opportunity
Key Takeaways
Some ongoing challenges:
Single family zoning
Not being able to target resources in a way that deliberately takes into account race, ethnicity, and other characteristics
Penalizing/discriminating against multigenerational households trying to qualify for income-based programs
Addressing the power of private equity firms in the housing market
Discrimination against formerly incarcerated renters, particularly by smaller mom and pop landlords
City policies that make it difficult to rezone underutilized land for more housing
Solutions to consider:
Opening single-family neighborhoods up to more gentle density
Taxing homes not used as primary dwellings
Removing the MID on second homes
Curbing land speculation and the power of private equity firms
Builders remedy type process for approvals
