Policy Discussion: Equal Housing Opportunity

  • Key Takeaways

    • Some ongoing challenges:

      • Single family zoning

      • Not being able to target resources in a way that deliberately takes into account race, ethnicity, and other characteristics

      • Penalizing/discriminating against multigenerational households trying to qualify for income-based programs

      • Addressing the power of private equity firms in the housing market

      • Discrimination against formerly incarcerated renters, particularly by smaller mom and pop landlords

      • City policies that make it difficult to rezone underutilized land for more housing

    • Solutions to consider:

      • Opening single-family neighborhoods up to more gentle density

      • Taxing homes not used as primary dwellings

      • Removing the MID on second homes

      • Curbing land speculation and the power of private equity firms

      • Builders remedy type process for approvals
